The Journey to 8K
The first 8K TV was officially unveiled in 2018, when Samsung introduced the Q900R at the IFA electronics trade show in Berlin. This groundbreaking model brought a stunning 7680×4320 pixels resolution to consumers, forever changing the standard for home entertainment. Soon after, manufacturers like LG and Sony followed with their own 8K models, but Samsung’s Q900R is widely recognized as the first commercially available 8K TV.
By February 2020, the Samsung Galaxy S20 became the first smartphone capable of recording video in 8K, thanks to its 108 MP sensor, which allowed for video capture at 7680×4320 pixels—a huge milestone for mobile videography. This marked the beginning of 8K content production available directly from consumer devices.
In the professional film industry, the first true production-ready 8K camera was the RED Weapon 8K, launched in 2016. This camera, featuring the Helium 8K S35 sensor, allowed filmmakers to shoot in 8192×4320 resolution, revolutionizing high-end film production with ultra-high-definition video.
Why We Created 8KDVD
Despite the rise of 8K TVs and smartphones with 8K video capabilities, one glaring issue remained: no true 8K streaming services and very few offline solutions for 8K playback. This is where we, at HDDVD Revived, saw the need for a new physical and digital platform—leading us to develop both 8KDVD and 8KFlikz, a dedicated streaming service offering content either originally shot in or remastered to 8K resolution.
While 8K streaming offers unmatched visual fidelity, it also demands considerable bandwidth, making it impractical for many users. To solve this, 8KDVD was created as the ideal offline solution—providing crystal-clear 8K video without the need for high-speed internet or streaming limitations.
Universal Compatibility
Since standalone 8KDVD players are not yet available, we’ve developed a solution that works across various platforms. Our 8KDVD system includes:
- A Windows application for seamless 8K playback.
- An HTML and Java-based fallback system that runs on any Chromium-based browser, ensuring compatibility with Windows, macOS, Linux, Ubuntu, and Android devices.
We provide launchers for all these platforms, making it easy to access and enjoy 8KDVD content anywhere. Our menu and navigation systems are fully designed to be integrated into potential standalone players, whether equipped with Blu-ray or HD DVD drives. We will also be releasing technical specifications for hardware manufacturers looking to integrate 8KDVD into their products.
8KDVD Disc Authoring: For Creators
We are in the final stages of developing an 8KDVD Disc Authoring Tool. With just 10 clicks or fewer, you’ll be able to:
- Encode your 8K footage for optimal quality.
- Create custom menus and chapters.
- Set up launchers for multiple platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux, Ubuntu, Android).
- Generate a master ISO ready for 8KDVD production.
This straightforward process is designed to help creators easily prepare professional-quality 8KDVDs, enabling both independent filmmakers and large-scale productions to distribute 8K content.
Artwork and Box Design Templates
In addition to the authoring tool, we offer Photoshop templates for disc and box artwork, allowing you to create polished, professional designs. The 8KDVD box is a DVD-sized case in red, helping your product stand out while offering a sleek, recognizable look for 8K content.
Licensing and Accessibility for Creators
If you are an independent creator or fan filmmaker and your production budget is under $50,000, or you distribute your work for free, our artwork and authoring tools are available at no cost.
For larger productions, our licensing fee is incredibly modest—just 0.05% of your production’s gross budget, with a maximum fee of $50,000, no matter how high the budget goes. For example, a production with a budget of $100,000 would only need to pay $50 in licensing fees.
If your project is community-funded (e.g., via Kickstarter or similar platforms), you can also access these tools for free. We want 8KDVD to be accessible to as many creators as possible, helping them deliver high-quality 8K content to their audiences.
Licensing and Resources for Hardware Developers
For hardware manufacturers interested in integrating 8KDVD technology into their devices, we are offering free access to branding, artwork, and technical resources until December 31, 2030. This gives you time to maximize your ROI while contributing to the 8K ecosystem. By enrolling as a hardware developer on our website, you will gain access to everything you need to build 8KDVD-compatible devices.
Please note that the use of Blu-ray logos, 8K logos (not 8KDVD-specific logos), and Blu-ray technology may require separate licensing agreements from their respective owners.
Join the 8K Revolution
8KDVD and 8KFlikz are set to launch in December 2024. This project is a small, low-budget passion initiative for us, and we are committed to making 8K entertainment accessible to everyone. There may be bumps along the way, but with a community-driven approach and low entry costs, we believe 8KDVD is the future of offline 8K entertainment.
Join us in this exciting journey, and be part of the revolution in 8K home viewing!
Looking forward to a prosperous future with you from all of us at hddvd-revived.com.
